HIMACHAL PRADESH HIGH COURT BAR ASSOCIATION SHIMLA
Before India's independence, the princely states, which made up what is now Himachal Pradesh, were governed by a variety of administrations and laws, often based on the whims of the ruler.
The journey towards an organized judicial system began when Himachal Pradesh was formed on April 15, 1948, by integrating 30 princely hill states. Initially a centrally administered area with its headquarters in Shimla, it was led by Chief Commissioner N.C. Mehta.
Key judicial developments include:
- 1948: A Court of Judicial Commissioner, vested with the powers of a High Court, was established and housed in the "Harvingtan" building in Shimla. It began functioning on August 15, 1948, alongside two District and Sessions Courts and 27 subordinate courts.
- 1954: After Bilaspur merged with Himachal Pradesh, the Judicial Commissioner's Court was reconstituted to cover the new state.
- 1967: The Delhi High Court Act replaced the Judicial Commissioner's Court with the Himachal Bench of the Delhi High Court. This new bench began operating in the "Ravenswood" building in Shimla.
- 1971: With Himachal Pradesh achieving statehood, it established its own High Court at "Ravenswood" on January 25, 1971.
Himachal Pradesh High Court Bar Association Shimla was established in the year 1971 and since then this Bar has continuously been providing services to the legal fraternity as well as to the people.

Association.

To make all efforts to maintain the dignity of the legal profession and
to promote legal ethics among its members.

To provide free legal aid to the deserving poor litigants.

To provide facilities to the members like establishing and maintaining
good Library, Bar Room or any other such place for the benefit of the
Members.

To do any other act(s) as decided by the General House, which would
be in the interest of Members.
